Patrick McGrath, PhD
Principal Investigator
Associate Professor in Biological Sciences, Director of 5 year BS/MS degrees in Biology and Bioinformatics
Patrick received his B.S. in Astronomy from the University of Illinois – Urbana/Champaign. He completed his PhD in Physics at Stanford University, where he worked with Dr. Harley McAdams on systems biology of the bacterial cell cycle. From there, he moved to Rockefeller University to work with Dr. Cori Bargmann on the evolution of behavior using the nematode C. elegans. He started his laboratory at Georgia Tech in 2012.
Nikesh Kumar
Bionformatics PhD student
Bioinformatics PhD student studying the evolution of complex mating behaviors in Lake Malawi cichlids through the lens of structural variant discovery. I’m utilizing the Bionano Genomics Saphyr platform to optically map cichlid genomes to understand the landscape of structural variants and gain insight into the evolution of bower building behaviors in sand-dwelling cichlid species.
Tucker Lancaster
Quantitative BioSciences PhD Candidate
Graduate student in the Quantitative BioScience program, focusing on biological applications of machine-learning and computer-vision. Currently working to improve automated workflows for accurate, high-volume characterization of Cichlid behaviors, including bower-construction and courtship.
Breanna Shi
Bioinformatics PhD Student
Breanna is proudly pursuing her PhD in Bioinformatics at Georgia Tech in the McGrath lab. Breanna Shi obtained her Masters of Science in Mathematics at the University of Minnesota in 2021, under the guidance of Dr. Noyes. Before attending University of Minnesota, Breanna earned a B.S. in Mathematics from Stetson University, under the guidance of Dr. Abbas. Breanna enjoys community outreach in the sciences and mathematics. During her undergraduate and masters, she often spent time mentoring students in mathematics, and computer science. Breanna is passionate about computer vision applications to understanding Cichlid aggression.
Dhruv Karve
Bioinformatics Masters Student
Completed undergraduate in Computer Engineering from University of Mumbai. Passionate about exploring and making modifications to existing algorithms, tools, and software. Good knowledge of full-stack web development. Working on utilizing Computer Vision techniques like Object detection & Pose Estimation, along with Data Visualization for analyzing social behaviors of Lake Malawi cichlids. Mentored by Tucker Lancaster
Taylor Cooper
Research Technician
After years in the field tracking diverse creatures from crawfish to pythons, Taylor has returned to civilization to investigate the evolution of social behavior in cichlids. In the McGrath Lab, she is working to generate hybrid cichlid strains and exploring the brains of various Lake Malawi species using single-nuclei RNA sequencing.
William Hancock
Undergraduate Researcher
I work on quantifying behaviors of Lake Malawi cichlids using computer vision and differential gene expression data. I am mentored by Breanna Shi
Annelie Minor
Undergraduate Researcher
I use object detection tools and computer vision to evaluate and quantify the behavior of Lake Malawi Cichlids. I am mentored by Breanna Shi.
